A handheld bacame a game console that became a set top box that became a major flop.

There is, of course, more to the story - but the sentence above pretty much sums it all up. Apple developed a genuine game console, but got scared after the rapid demise of the 3DO. A modem was quickly included in the package, and the unit could now also function as a "cheap" web brosing machine (a PC was about twice the price of the Pippin in the US).
