Blackbelt

The Blackbelt is by far one of the most mysterious Sega myths of all time. The name resembles both the highest degree in the martial arts Karate and the higest title in the high-end business strategy Six Sigma. And just like these, the Sega Blackbelt strives to be the best.

The story goes that in 1997, Sega decided to create two console projects. One developed by Sega of Japan, and the other developed by Sega of America. Both technologies were demoed at an internal strategy conference, and Sega of Japan's project came out on top - dubbed the Dural (later renamed Katana and finally released as the Dreamcast) This allegedly caused the whole Sega of America Blackbelt team to resign, and the whole project was scrapped. Only very few prototypes should have been made, an none have ever reached the hands of video game collectors. And this probably for the best.
