Japan's chief of Xbox operations, Yoshihiro Maruyama, has voiced that although an Xbox 360 console with HD-DVD disc reading capabilities is possible, it will never be used for games on the platform.
Commenting in the Enterbrain's Famitsu Xbox magazine, "It's a possibility, but it won't have any relationship to gaming," Maruyama said, according to a translation from US website GameSpot. "If the Xbox 360 uses a next-generation DVD drive in the future, it will only be used for watching movies that run on next-generation DVDs."
This statement backs up what many are already saying - that Microsoft cannot change the media its shipping on games half way through the consoles life cycle, leaving owners of the DVD version unable to play HD-DVD games. However Microsoft chairman Bill Gates was quoted as saying
"The initial shipments of Xbox 360 will be based on today's DVD format. We are looking at whether future versions of Xbox 360 will incorporate an additional capability of an HD DVD player or something else."
HD-DVD have seen several defectors recently to rival format Blu-ray and Maruyama's own phrase of 'next-generation DVD' rather than HD-DVD specifically is an interesting one.
Microsoft, although a firm supporter of HD-DVD hasn't yet extended that support to putting HD-DVD drives in the Xbox 360.
