Killing of Animals for Art?
Warning: You may find the photos in the link below disturbing, and the facts are also disturbing.
In Stockholm, Sweden, the Wetterling Gallery has held an exhibit of work by Nathalia Edenmont.
In case you prefer not to look at the photos of her work, a domestic cat, a domestic dove and domestic white mice were killed in order to be incorporated into photos that were then put on exhibit at the gallery and then on the gallery’s web site. Although they are not graphic slaughter photos, they are all the more grotesque, when one realizes, after a second, that the animals are dead and that they were killed for this purpose.
Below is the link to the Wetterling Gallery web site where you may see the work in question by clicking on “The Archive,” then clicking on Nathalia Edenmont. By clicking on the second link, you may read what they have to say about it.

Please send a separate e-mail to Mr. Bjorn Wetterling and Ms. Josefina Bergstrom at the Wetterling Gallery. The e-mails may be identical; you may use the sample letter below or write one in your own words.
We’ve also included the contact information for the Minister of Justice in Sweden. If you choose to write to him, to request an investigation by whichever department is appropriate, please note that Swedish animal protection laws are in many ways more enlightened than those in America.
If you wish to notify any Swedish animal organizations that may not know about this, you may find some of these at the link below. Please thank them for all the work that they do on behalf of animals.
Thank you very much for speaking out on behalf of these animals who were killed!

Sample Letter to the Wetterling Gallery:
Dear (see names above):
I am sorry that I am unable to write to you in Swedish.
I am writing to you to express my dismay at the work by Nathalia Edenmont that appears on the Wetterling Gallery web site. I am asking that the work of Nathalia Edenmont be removed from your web site, and that you allow no further exhibits or sales of her work by the Wetterling Gallery.
The work depicts the heads of a cat, mice and a dove. I understand that these animals were killed and beheaded.
Having read very carefully the explanation provided on the Wetterling Gallery web site as to the reason these photos were exhibited and included on the web site, I feel that the central issue is not at all whether or not the photos are art, whether or not they are good art, or whether or not they are thought-provoking.
The issue is that the works displayed involve the inhumane treatment of animals, which is normally a crime, and even when it is not formally a crime, it is generally considered criminal by a majority of human beings. We all live in human society, and none of us has unrestricted artistic freedom. It is not acceptable to commit a crime in order to produce a work of art.
These animals were sentient beings whose lives were taken from them, and the right to life is the basic right of all living beings. In addition, the killing of animals, even when done by a veterinarian, generally involves some level of pain or stress, though this can be minimized. These animals may, instead, have been killed by a private, unlicensed individual.
I feel very certain that animal abuse is no more acceptable to the majority of the Swedish people than it is here in this country. In fact, Sweden sets an example for other nations, including our own, in terms of its very enlightened animal protection legislation.
I feel certain that you meant no harm by exhibiting these photos, and that, most likely, you were unaware that they involved the inhumane treatment of animals who are normally beloved pets, and perhaps, as well, you had not given extensive thought to the fact that animals have the capacity to enjoy being alive just as we do.
Thank you very much for considering removing these photos from your web site and not holding any further exhibits that exploit animals at the Wetterling Gallery.
Sincerely,
(Your name)
Sample Letter to the Minister of Justice:
Dear Minister:
I am sorry to be unable to write to you in Swedish.
I am writing to draw your attention to a display of artwork that I believe involved animal abuse and that I feel may be illegal under Swedish law. I would be very grateful if you would be so kind as to pass this on to the appropriate department, so that an investigation can be held as to whether or not a crime has been committed.
In order to produce this artwork, a cat, a dove and white mice were killed. These are all domestic animals that are usually kept as pets.
This art work was exhibited by the Wetterling Gallery in Stockholm and may be viewed on their web site:

Please click on “the archive”, and then click on the name “Nathalia Edenmont”.
In their newsletter, also on-line, at the link below, the Gallery states that Nathalia Edenmont “has killed the animals in as humane a way as possible”.

Although I have no knowledge of Swedish law, I am aware that the animal protection laws in Sweden are among the most enlightened in the world, and I believe that it may be illegal for a private, unlicensed individual to kill a pet animal, such as a cat, a domestic dove or a white mouse. I feel that depriving the animal of its life, and causing whatever pain or stress the animal experienced, is certainly inhumane and probably also illegal.
I would be very grateful if you would pass this letter on to whichever department is appropriate with the request that this matter be investigated, and that charges be filed if appropriate.
I very much appreciate your concern and your help. Thank you very much.
Sincerely,
(Your name)
